THE SACRED AND THE PROFANE

DREAM NOTES

 I wrote the Agape scene.

As for the banquet dream, well, such things happen.  The ironic thing is, the moment you tell yourself, in a lucid moment, that you will forget any part of a dream, that will generally be the only part that you remember.  I suppose both Deirdre and I tried to fancy ourselves pure and impervious to such thoughts, while at the same time striving towards an unbalanced sanctity, which naturally builds up a Shadow-charge.  Real sanctity knows its own Shadow and deals with it with open eyes.

Regarding the guard’s thoughts, I have dreamed of Sister Assunta.  It seemed likely that a student of hers, in the army, would rationalize like this.

Prayer cloths often feature as a background detail in my dreams of the Charadoc, so I wrote here of the rebels receiving some, so as to explain their presence later.  As far as the clothing goes, they did appear brightly-clad and with somewhat wider sleeves, for the timeframe following this.  I didn’t have far to look for a reason why.
