IN THE MOUNTAINS OF FIRE
Volume 1: Welcome to the Charadoc!
PUSHING ON ANYWAY
I spun the memory of Headmaster Wallace Weatherbent from a flash of dream of nothing but the dazzling sight of ocean. But as you will eventually see, it matters.
This part fell entirely by accident on April Fool’s Day. Yet Jonathan would see it as apt, considering the folly of trying to continue on without help, so I couldn’t let it go without remark.
Jonathan may love the Charadoc, but his natal land was actually Byssinia in the same continent. Since other dreams have shown that Byssinia long suffered from The Vendetta Wars, it doesn’t take much imagination to deduce how Jonathan wound up orphaned and packed off to Til Institute in his childhood. Perhaps as a boy he fantasized about someday going to the peaceful, orderly Charadoc, never dreaming that he would live in a much farther country first.
I vividly remember that terrible march in the mountains, with Damien singing incoherent snatches of songs to keep us going. I don’t remember when or where I dreamed it, though.
